Clinical & Medical Waste

Waste segregation at the point of generation enables the safe management of healthcare wastes. It is an essential part of ensuring that healthcare activities don’t pose a risk of infection to carers and anyone else coming into contact with the waste containers.

Clinical waste is defined in the Controlled Waste Regulations 1992 and it means any waste which consists wholly or partly of:

  • Human or Animal Tissue
  • Blood, Bodily Fluids or Excretions
  • Drugs or other Pharmaceutical Products
  • Swabs or Medical Dressings
  • Syringes, Needles or other Sharp Instruments (Sharps)
  • Any other clinical waste that can be infectious or contaminated
