Healthcare providers waste labelling

Proper labelling of hazardous waste is not just best practice — it’s a legal requirement in the UK.

Whether you’re a GP surgery, clinic, care setting or dental practice, you must correctly label hazardous waste bags and sharps containers so that the waste can always be traced back to where it was produced.

Healthcare waste producers must follow the Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2005.

HTM07-01 states – “Each waste bag must be traceable back to its producer; this includes the post code, facility and department”. Traceability proves that waste has been managed correctly from point of production to final disposal.

You must label:

  • Hazardous clinical waste bags

  • Sharps containers

Labels should be clear and legible and include:

  • Name of business

  • Business postcode

  • Date the waste was placed at collection point

  • B Hygienic noted as your waste collector

This ensures the waste can be traced back to its producer and linked to the required records and documentation.

It has always been a requirement for healthcare producers to label their waste. Going forward we will not be able to collect unlabelled waste.

B Hygienic can provide waste bag tags to make it easier for you – please feel free to get in touch for more information
